Halloween Monster Cookies


Looking for a quick and clever way to encourage your little ghouls to get creative in the kitchen? I've got you! These spooky Halloween Monster Cookies are a snack, craft and activity all rolled into one! The entire process is super simple too -- which isn't always the case with littles ones in the kitchen, am I right? 





The kids and I made these for the first time last year and they had an absolute blast. They were so proud and so tickled by the silly monster faces they made. It was so cute. They talked about them for weeks and have already started to ask me when we can make them this year. I suppose that's how a holiday tradition is born! 

What's so cool about these cookies and this entire activity is that there are no rules. The kids can pick and choose their own decor and easily help with the entire baking process. The super-simple sugar cookie recipe only requires 3 ingredients! Should you choose to add color to the homemade icing recipe, it serves as another fun task for the kids to do. My kids could've come up with 100 different color varieties had I given them enough bowls of icing to color!

SHORTBREAD SUGAR COOKIES

INGREDIENTS

- 2 sticks butter, softened
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 cup powdered sugar
- 1 tablespoon water
- wooden craft sticks

INSTRUCTIONS

- Preheat oven to 350ยบ F.
- In large stand mixer, cream together butter, flour, powdered sugar and water until a soft dough forms. Use a medium cookie scoop to drop rounds of dough onto a parchment-lined baking sheet.
- Press wooden craft sticks into the center of each cookie, then use a spoon to gently flatten the dough rounds. (They won't expand much at all while baking, so you don't have to worry about spreading.)
- Bake for 12-17 minutes, or until the cookies set and turn golden around the edges. Remove and cool completely before frosting.


BUTTERCREAM FROSTING

INGREDIENTS

- 2 sticks butter, softened
- 1 (2-pound) bag powdered sugar
- 1/4 cup milk (any kind)
- 1 tablespoon vanilla
- 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
- gel food coloring

INSTRUCTIONS

- In a stand mixer, beat all ingredients together until light and fluffy. Separate frosting into different bowls (however many you prefer) and tint with gel food coloring. Spread on top of cooled shortbread cookies and have fun decorating!

I purchased all of our sprinkles online because it was so hard to find what we were looking for in stores. We seriously went to 3 or 4 different stores and they were all sold out! The good thing is, everything is online these days and it ships so fast! Here's what we used: small eyeball sprinkles, jumbo eyeball sprinkles, halloween mix sprinkles and large confetti sprinkles.
