Sandhills State Park

August 27, 2017

Another fantastic destination we found during our epic road trip research was Sandhills State Park in Monahans, Texas. This park is located right along the highway, just two hours northeast of Marfa, making it the perfect place to stop before completing our final leg of the journey.

We paid our $8 park admission and headed down a narrow, winding road to get to the park area. I quickly traded my road trip leggings for a pair of denim and we headed out. The sand was hot as hell but I should've known better seeing that we were in direct sunlight and it was 95 degrees.

We climbed up a few hills until we realized how out of shape we were. We took some photos with our fancy camera and then some of just us with our selfie stick, which was a hilarious disaster. Then we just sat together for a while and just took it all in. Before dying of heat exhaustion, we decided to pack it up and get to Marfa already. I was so ready for an ice cold margarita.

On our way back home, we coincidentally approached Sandhills State Park right before sunrise, so we pulled off and drove back to the same area of the park that we stopped at on our way to Marfa. We sat in the sand (which was much cooler this time) and watched the sun rise over the tallest hill of sand. It was a really nice way to end our trip together.

If you're headed to Marfa, or somewhere along the way, definitely make time to stop at Sandhills. It's such a beautiful, yet unexpected treasure in the middle of oil country. Bonus points if you get there at sunset or sunrise.
